I'm looking for resources that discuss the use of 'virtual assistants' that are visible to the user on screen and direct them through an application, be it solely during on boarding or throughout the use of an app.
The most prominent example I can think of is Clippy from Microsoft Office, and potentially the spam app BonziBuddy.
With the advent of Siri, Cortana and similar technologies, these have come to be defined as 'virtual assistants' making it hard to find information on the potential impact of visual representations to users.
I was hoping somebody may have a different name I should be looking for, or some resources that discuss this potential element in user experience design.
Great design resource
