The World Series patches on the players' uniforms are shiny this year. Anyone know why?

This is the first time I've noticed a championship emblem on a game Jersey in any major league US sport look like plastic, vinyl, or just a sticker of some sort. It doesn't give me the same feel as an embroidered emblem patch does. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'm wondering if anyone has some insight on the design reasoning behind this. And is it something that happens outside the US? Or even something that I'm just noticing how in the US?
