Is there some way to 'temporarily' resize an item in Photoshop so you can play around with the sizes of different elements without losing resolution?

What I've done in the past is mess with the sizes with a copy-merged until I have it the way I like it but it would be awesome if there was a way to do this. I mean when you're Transforming something it keeps the resolution - until you hit enter...
