Hi!
In my opinion, design from early to mid 2000's is just objectively bad. It's noisy, it's overtly casual, and more particular points will follow with specific examples of specific areas of design:
-
Cars - the cars of 2000-2005 are not good looking. The cars are uninspired and timid in their designs example example. Retro has only just started with the resurrected Mini and won't get mainstream for a couple years, the cars lack the elegance they used to have and the aggression they will have. The also lack the novelty of being the first batch of neutral, plasticky cars, as this honour goes to early-to-mid 90s models. In short, they have nothing going for the designs.
-
The fashion - again, a middle ground where nothing is really nice. Parachute and oversized clothes are gone, and form-fitting clothes are yet to become popular. Distastefulness is in, and so is overt casualness. In my opinion, casual women's clothes from this time makes them look like sexualized middle schoolers: example, example, and so do the men's clothes - frosted tips could never possibly look mature and respectable.
-
Electronics - sci-fi inspired plastic galore! example
Same goes for typefaces, tv shows and a lot of other stuff - what are your opinions on this? I don't think it's the simple 'design-has-cycles' thing - it's recognized that 70s design is, in most respects, simpy not really good objectively, and I the same is true for the 2000-2005 period.
