Help making a painting turned vector less jagged?

Hey,

I am using illustrator to try and convert a painted to a vector file to use as a graphic, however when I do it comes out like this. Can anyone give me some advice on how to smooth out the edges, either here or in illustrator, so they don't look as jagged?
