I'm a graphic designer who just graduated. I've recently picked up some freelance work but am unsure of the price I should charge. My client owns a small fashion boutique and wants a site to display the usual information but also wants a functioning store where users can add clothing to a cart and purchase the items. I've never dealt with an eCommerce site before but I have stumbled upon some WordPress plugins that could make the process much easier for me.
What is something like this worth? I've had professors tell me in the past not to ruin the market and charge a base price of like $600 for any site. I'd love that money but I'm not really up for screwing people out of their money if I don't have to either. Opinions?
For a school project (IB CAS Long Term) I've been in the process of building an online programming academy website which I will upload video tutorials weekly for various programming languages and web design. I started off doing basic plans in Adobe Muse but found myself moving towards squarespace.com due to the poor video optimization in Adobe Muse. However, squarespace.com does not offer me templates which satisfy my needs for the website. I have basic knowledge of HTML and CSS so I'd prefer to use a website builder. Please let me know your thoughts on my steps from here and any programs you recommend for this project.
As a freelance/small company, all of my clients have been word of mouth and this makes business very inconsistent. In your experience, what's the best way to find clients of the lower price range? (I specialize in smaller websites such as small businesses, start ups, and individuals)
Ideally a cross-platform app (e.g. built with Electron, etc) otherwise an OS X app.
I'm stuck in a permanent redesign loop with a client. I make the changes they want, they change their mind again. This has been going on for months.
Money isn't the problem here; I'm getting paid for all the hours. I do want to be free of this project. I've given the client all the guidance I could as far as functionality and usability — but they keep changing their mind as to the aesthetic. We seem to keep about 10% of the specific requested changes. The client is getting very frustrated (with themselves, not me). The site is very far past its deadline.
I can put my foot down when it comes to usability or requests that are bad ideas, but I can't really object to aesthetic or look-and-feel changes.
Any advice is much appreciated.
I know it's terribly subjective, but I wondered if anyone might post some websites who really stand out for them from a design standpoint.
First off. Is this even legal? I only want to embed my own permanent personal hangouts page for my friends and I. The website I am using is "SquareSpace".
I aim to add a few types of social content on this particular page (forums, irc, voice chat, twitch stream)
The only services I could find as an alternative (and I really dislike the look) are Tinychat and Barc. These two are not very convenient to operate.
Well I tought my hubby how to do a certain style of art/design in photoshop and he went crazy and did a couple, and i told him to try to sell them... He does 1 every week or every 2 weeks.
At work we've been running quarterly sessions for the design team to share anything that interests them from the design/visual world. This extends to new work they come across, any personal projects they're working on, or any new software features they've discovered. Anything design related really.
The sessions have been met with a mixed response, and there are 2 people who never contribute citing not having time to find anything. This excuse particularly irks me as they do not need to go far to find something worthwhile to bring to the table: it could be a new billboard poster they simply walked past on the way to work that caught their eye.
I've discussed with a colleague how to take the sessions forward and encourage contributions. Adding more structure (running order, alloted time for each person) and creating a 'manifesto' (aims of the session) are being considered.
I was wondering if anyone does something similar and how they maintain an interesting and engaging atmosphere.
I just thought it would be fun for a few other people to work on it with me. I bought the domain name already, and I am hosting it as well.
Hello...
So I have been doing a few courses on how to learn html and css for tumblr pages. And decided that I have a bare basic understanding that I probably could try to do a really simple html email.
The problem is the tutorial I was following doesn't seem to make sense. See here: web design tutorial
My biggest problem is that I do not know how, even through the other code academy's, do I link my own photos. I know they require a url, but I don't know if I should be hosting them through imgur or I can host them off my computer from the c drive.
I had a friend attempt to explain to me, but she was trying to set up a website, not just a web based e-mail.
The website I built is www.mytacradio.com
Its a simple page to post live broadcast and store an archive to watch past broadcasts. I created this hidden tabbed framework in bootstrap to keep everything loaded at once, to be easier on mobile devices. I'm finding however with the increase in archive size, the load time has drastically increased. Should I just create a second page to load the archive, or should I use AJAX to only load the archive when necessary? What would keep a better user experience?
If you are interested, please provide your portfolio and also give me your price. I live in a country where idea of an hourly payment doesn't exist, so it would be easier for me to sell to my employers as a one time payment than hourly.
I'd like to make a very simple animation similar to this - http://ift.tt/1KSiY0p of a tetrahedron rotating.
I'm completely new to animation - with this in mind, what is the best approach? Create it as a gif in Photoshop? I've not used Flash before and will have approx a day or less to create this.
Any positive advice would be much appreciated.
Hello, I am really itching to add a feature to a school project I am making because I feel like it's necessary but don't know how to approach and actually make it, so I'd like some guidance and would appreciate any advice. So I have a page called "Projects" where every time I would click "add project" a modal would pop up creating a new row in the html code with 3 columns(Just the layout I need and have currently) and on the pop up I would want to specify the information I want in every each of the columns(From left to right - A project image/logo - Project name/small description - Cost/ Amount contributed) I'd appreciate any pointers! I believe there are some cms solutions that I can implement but I would rather make it on my own for the sake of learning.
Hi everyone, I made an app for people to familiarize themselves with Hex color codes and the color they represent. I got a couple of messages from people who teach/study web design and they really liked it. I have updated the app to have a section that explains how hexadecimal color codes work, as well as a new feature that keeps track of how many correct answers you get in a row; that way you can track your improvement. I hope you enjoy the app and it helps you with coloring your designs.

Hi r/web_design!
I have an issue where I can't get images to autosize to a set height div.
Literally the beginnings of my project website is here: http://ift.tt/1L4bv1J
It's still in very very early stages! I've set the height of the boxes to 300px so you can see the issue I'm having. I'd like the images to resize down with the div.
Could anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
I want to add a border to an image carousel but nothing I've tried has worked. Should I try an outline instead?
I hear a lot that WP websites aren't very secure and are vulnerable, what steps do I need to take to make a website secure for the client? Plugins like SecureIt? Getting a SSL certificate? Love to hear your guys thoughts.
Here is the website I'm on about as an example. I'm not so fussed on the animations, just the generic feel of the different sized boxes on their homepage?
I'm wanting to create it in bootstrap so it can be quick. I'm not getting paid much at all for it as they're a family friend however I would still want it to look decent.
If it can't be created in bootstrap, are there any other methods/techniques you'd recommend to get the desired effect?
Thanks!
Hello web_design! I was put in the direction of this subreddit after posting on /r/learnprogramming with a web-design related issue I'm having. I'm an average skilled webdesigner who's run into an issue after taking over a project for someone else, which I thought was a fitting challenge. I am supposed to write a neat looking calender, and I've got everything set up in PHP and the PHP is even drawing event-data from a SQL database. So far so good. However, when I print out the eventlist - the calender so to say - to my monitor it doesn't look as intended. I want to print 3 rows with 4 colums, adding up the months in the year, wherein I can present the events that are upcoming. So, Jan-Feb-Mar-Apr on the first line, the next 4 months on the next line(row) and so on. Here's a quick visual of what I mean:
Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
My current script or setup however, isn't really allowing me to move stuff around as freely as I was expecting. After taking over the project I have cleaned up the HTML and the code, making it easier to work with, but now I've run into a real headache. This is a screenshot of how it currently looks: http://ift.tt/1QKYBpo.
My code can be found here: http://ift.tt/1LjTMFx It is my plan to style the page using bootstrap, but I can't quite wrap my head around how I'm supposed to go about it. Right now the code is just printing all the months in one long list with no regard for design. I want it to display in a few more colums and later on add a 'text-sneak-peek' kind of thing where you can only view X amount of letters as a preview on each event. This is just to make the styling more alike overall.
As you can tell by the source, I am planning on using bootstrap once I know how to work with my divs, but I don't really know how as they are all printed through PHP and as such the divs share a class. I also want to note there is something unexpected going on: In cases where a month has multiple events, like September, only the first event is attached to the heading 'September'. The rest of the events for that month generate their own div with the same class.
Am I doing something wrong?
Any help much appreciated!
I am working on a website and have a clear cart icon. Now i alsof want a shop icon. But there does not seem to be a standard welk known shop icon. What is your suggestion?
Hey,
19 year old college student here. I've been studying and practicing web design and development since middle school. It's become a hobby of mine that I've come to love and I've just recently decided that this is the field that I want to work towards as a career.
My abilities are all in the front end, so I specialize in HTML, CSS, Javascript, and graphics design. Currently practicing angularJS. I want to offer front-end design and development this upcoming summer after I've spent the next 6-7 months studying and improving my skills. I've done this in the past but strictly through family, friends, and references, so it wasn't extremely official. My portfolio has become pretty developed as a result however. All my clients have been very pleased with me. I also live in the silicon valley.
I'm looking for as much advice as I can in regards to both the business side of things and how I can best improve my actual web skills, but primarily the business side since this is where i am lacking the most. Are there any resources out there that will help a web developer step into the freelancing world?
Any advice at all on where to go from here would be very appreciated!
I'm all against websites that completely take control out of the user's hands just to show off some fancy - and quite often really laggy and not smooth - animations. However, when using my mouse wheel to scroll down a page I find myself annoyed by how jumpy it is. I know you can adjust mouse settings but the speed of it is just fine for me, just way too jumpy. In contrast to that, scrolling with a touch device is sooo much better!
There are things solutions like this one out there and personally I kinda like it! Of course it depends on the actual page your using it on but for a text heavy page I see myself using it eventually.
So, what do you guys think?
