Years back, we used to do this. We would offer 3 designs and ask the client to pick one. Now, we work on a single design, trying to make it as strong as possible, with the option to start afresh if we have it completely wrong. Generally we work with the client to improve the design based on feedback. However, occasionally (and just now) we get a client saying "can I see a different design" with no feedback at all. They simply expect choice at the start, I think because people used to do this, or perhaps they still do.
So, do you offer multiple design start the start, or a single one? I do not mean variations - occasionally we will offer a single design with a couple of tweaked variations.
Whichever way you work, why do you work this way? For us, we used to put so much wasted effort into "filler" designs, and the single design approach works well, however we do have to educate the client about this as like I say, they often expect 3 or more designs (sometimes 5).
I would love to hear your thoughts. Could you please also state if you are a freelancer, agency etc, and how long you have been professional.
