Need help in finding guides and learning process for making sites that can use excel docs (XML I think) or spreadsheets as data entry points.

So I am getting newer at web design and I want to start taking on freelance projects soon. Something I want to do is give my clients an easy wat to get content to me. Something I thought of is something as simple as an excel doc to give me content.

For example, lets say I help a local restraunt with their site. I want to be able to give them a simple way to import and manage things like menu items, prices, specials, calender events, ect. I know this is a common practice but I am curious if there is a good way to go about this? (Google Doc perhaps?)

I think this is possible, with XML, but I also realize I'm going about this process from the begining so I have no idea where to start. The Googles are so vast I am all over the place and a lot of guides I have found are all very different.

Does anyone have a guide or so they know of where I can go about this process?
