Stupid question, why is the 960 px grid system used?

I am really new to web design. I do know some html and css, but am not aware of good practices. I started computer science in college and one thing we have to do is base our websites on the 960 px grid system.

Now, I understand how it's easy for designing, but I still have a question about sizing. Wouldn't using a fixed width (in pixels) result in a smaller page on bigger resolutions? Do you use a combination of fixed and dynamic (percentage) widths? Are there any resources talking about sizing a website?

I know I should probably ask this at school, but it's weekend and I really, really would like to know.
