Why are company and product logos becoming so plain and generic?

I've noticed this with a lot of things. They have this cool 3D logo that stands out, and then they decide to change it to this bland, generic looking thing. In 2007, the Windows Vista/7 logo was this glowing orb with the Windows flag inside, which looked interesting and a bit mystifying. Then with Windows 8 in 2012, they changed it to just four solid blue flat squares tilted sideways. The Pepsi logo used to be this, and now it's this. Heck, even this subreddit's theme looks flat and boring, even though someone took their time designing it.
