How are they creating that custom printed look? ie making the edges slightly rough but not uniform in any way?

I was thinking maybe rasterise the text and rotate a few of the letters, make the kerning irregular and then scale up to pixelate it real bad, then bitmap at 50% threshold?
Any other ideas?
