What are the best practices for using images in your designs?

For context:

I typically design at one extreme (simple, utilitarian) or the other (I'd simply call it "arty" but for sake of example, something like an artists site where the content is to be consumed and not interacted with or manipulated). Projects where we might not care to be mobile or user friendly.

For sites where a lot of visitor interaction is expected, I generally refrain as much as I possibly can from using images outside of absolute necessity. Things like a logo in a header and the like.

I find myself inspired to buck that trend for a project I have in my lap, using highly textured images and handwritten buttons. I expect to use rather large images to get the effect I want as making small, repeatable patterns didn't seem to work. There would essentially be a custom image for a background and a heading for every section within the body. For what amounts to a news site/blog there's never that amount of images in the average design.

I may be overthinking it but I'm unsure of the best ways to do this. Or at least in the least ugliest manner possible.

[Serious] What do you call the type of product whose form imitates function?

This has been on my mind for a while. There's a huge trend these days of producing cheap products that emulate more valuable products. I need a name for these things.

Some examples:

  • Clothes with fake pockets

  • Products made with white metal

  • Ikea-class furniture; looks expensive, but only lasts a year before showing serious signs of use (particle board with laminate surface)

  • Cheap plastic vehicle components that are made to look like carbon fiber

Comparison words:

Knockoff: Products, often of inferior quality, made or sold under another's brand name without the brand owner’s authorization. (I.e. a cheap product made to look like a specific expensive product.)

Skeuomorph: A derivative object that retains ornamental design cues from structures that were necessary in the original. (I.e. the new version imitates the look of the old version).

The word I'm looking for applies to original products, so knockoff and skeuomorph don't fit.

Any ideas?

While we're at it, what are your thoughts on these "hollow" products?

Merit of using interactive pure CSS3 over JS?

I'm still in the process of learning web design in general.

As far as I understand CSS3 are capable of supporting user interaction but as the interaction becomes more complicate the code becomes more and more untidy, hacky, and exploit-ty looking, I wouldn't even recognize my own code after a few weeks.

Does CSS3 offers that superior a performance worth trading with readability for??

Quick Question: What is the part of a website that breaks up sections called?

I'm thinking page transition but I'm not sure.

Just for some more clarification, I am talking about the part of websites that divides different sections using an image or css, not just a block. Something like on this website (notice the diagonal colours and how it divides the different sections).

Need Assistance with what Tools to Use

Thank you for taking the time to look:

I desire to make a website with a particular use. I want users to be able to create groups. They create groups by answering specific questions, for example, demographic information (A man would select "Male". So a man would be put into a group with other men. That is not my intention, just an example). Essentially, I would assume it would be a database, by definition. I have a Cliff Notes knowledge on most of the things I assume would be involved. But if you wanted to create this what would you do? Can this be more simply achieved with a CMS? Thank you. I have included basic mock-ups of what I envision: http://ift.tt/1JT9uY5

Landscape Architecture/Design

I'm interested in getting into landscape design or landscape architecture, however I have no experience in this area. I'm a horticulture major, and have the option of pursuing a masters in landscape architecture in a few years, but I haven't really ever designed anything. The horticulture program at my college is in the design school, but it is possible to pursue careers in areas such as agriculture and whatnot.

Does anyone have any advice for me? What should I do to start practicing honing my design skills?

Putting a price on my work.

I'm admittedly new to the design world, both web and graphic. A friend approached me about building a simple website for him and helping him with some branding, so I've built him a website and created a logo for the company. Anyway, the business is labor-based (junk removal), most of which I won't have any part in, but I've been offered some equity (yet to be determined) in the company to maintain the website and do some marketing work for him. I'm planning an extended backpacking trip and some passive money for work that I could do remotely would be amazing. It's a good friend and I'm learning on the fly; I'm not money-grubbing, and neither is he.

What's a reasonable percentage to ask for the work that I've put in and what's to come?

How is the job market for someone who just knows HTML/CSS/Wordpress PHP?

So I graduated with a degree in Graphic Design and taught myself HTML, CSS, and Wordpress PHP. For the last five years I have been designing a developing Wordpress sites as the sole web designer/developer at my company (occasionally working with/directing other designers/developers). I'm proficient in HTML, CSS, and PHP as it relates to Wordpress, but I don't know any other Front/backend technologies (I can use and modify someone else's JS/Jq, but I can't write something from scratch).

How is the job market for someone with my skillset? Would Front End Developer be an appropriate job listing to respond to?

Any ideas for university final project?

My fellow designers, I need ideas for my final project at university. Would appreciate your help lol. So on the 23rd of February, I have to present 3 ideas about the project. I'm not sure how that's gonna work, but I think the lecturers will pick the most interesting ideas. It could be anything, like making a book, or just branding and stuff. To be honest, I don't like branding too much, BUT if it's like musician branding than I'm fine. I'm more into advertising stuff, the campaign thing.

A few years ago, my senior made a book as her final project and until now, people are crazy about it. The book is about the 90s generation, it's in Indonesian and it's called "Generasi 90an" if you're wondering what it looks like. I have some ideas, but not sure if they're good enough. Uhmmm also I'm thinking to use reddit as my reference but still not sure how, maybe the subreddits or something. Any ideas? Somebody? ;D

Design student: How to list inventions on resume?

I am a graduating industrial design student. I have about two projects that I have completed in the past year, and I am considering pursuing patents for the two inventions. For the sake of privacy, I have chosen not to include them on my web portfolio. However, I have a PDF portfolio detailing the process behind to two projects in case I ever discuss them face-to-face in an interview.

Would it make sense to list these two inventions in a specific section on my resume? I do not want to mislead anyone into thinking my projects are on my website, however, I would still like to indicate that I have these two projects and am willing to discuss them.

potential job need some advice

long time lurker here finally posting,

I had my first ever interview with a company that I'm both really excited about and nervous. My website isn't live, but so far they liked what they saw in both my website and portfolio piece. And I'm treating this as a second interview like any other job, but can't help but get giddy that I may finally be able to make a start at a proper career!

I've been offered the task to build simple wordpress websites (its a low end entry level position given my knowledge so far) using Bridge, a simple drag and drop theme. I have a basic knowledge of WP and a fair amount of HTML/ CSS knowledge to feel about an intermediate level.

I'm learning fast, as its currently taken me 5 months to get to this point.

The advice I'm looking for is;

How would one get familiar with WP when you have to subscribe to their services to have a practical session with the interface?

What should I know in preparation for my first day?

Anything else you guys might want to chip in on.

[Question/Help]I'm trying to get rid of the padding on a div that's fixed at the bottom of the screen. It won't seem to go away

Hi all, I not generally a web designer; I consider myself to be a web coder. Accordingly, my CSS skills aren't exactly the best. I apologize if this seems like a rudimentary question, but it's driving me nuts.

I have a div that's fixed at the bottom of the page. I need for there to be absolutely no padding on any side. Here's a codepen and the relevant code:

<!-- CSS --> #testDiv { position: fixed; bottom: 0; width: 100%; border: 1px solid red; color: red; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; } <!-- html in body --> <div id='testDiv'>testing</div>

As you can probably see, white space appears on the top and bottom between the text and the border.

Thanks a lot, folks!

[Question] CSS transition when classes are added?

I have a parent div and two divs inside of it: a sidebar and a content area. The class of nosidebar is initially applied to the parent div, which signals the sidebar to have a property right: -325px and the content to fill the screen. When the sidebar is toggled, the class of nosidebar is replaced with showsidebar and this causes the sidebar div to have property right: 0 and the content div to have right: 325px and opacity: 0.8, shifting it to the left and partially fading it out. This is all controlled by what class the parent div has.

So far this works, but when the transition happens instantly and abruptly. I would like to animate the toggle effect so that the sidebar and content divs slide in and out, and so the content div fades to a lower opacity.

Is there a way I can do this in CSS?
