when floating an element in css, does it no longer become part of the container

Just a quick question, lets say I have a container and a navbar. The navbar has no height and has a black background. I float the nav links to the right. Does that mean it's not part of the container anymore?

<div class="container"> <nav> <li><a href="#">Home</a></li> </nav> </div>
