Since most English-speaking people would never really spend time browsing Chinese or Arabic sites, they might diverge in popular styles. It would be cool to see what popular differences there are.
What I'm about to say is a huge simplification, but back in psychology we learned that Eastern cultures sometimes look at things more holistically, while Western cultures tend to look more at independent parts. So an Eastern 'beautiful' garden would consist of a lot of smaller plants complementing one another (example), while a Western 'beautiful' garden would show off independent 'beautiful' plants (example). Now that's just a first thought, maybe it's a really bad one, but I'm curious at what possible differences are. I guess for Arabic sites you'd have to design based on reading right-to-left, but maybe there are other aspects we never realize because we never browse around Arabic sites.
I started a new company called " All Things Emoji'. We make emoji inspired apparel & accessories. Having just launched the site today we have not yet made a sale but we are confident in our business. All of our apparel is made and printed here in Los Angeles. Our apparel graphics include emojis and funny quotes to go with them. For the future we are adding about 4 designs a week and doing collections for St. Patricks Day, Mothers Day and Election day etc. Social Media will be our main force to getting sales using mainly Facebook and Instagram. Would like your thoughts on the business side of things and web design. Thank you!
How do you share any changes to the existing style guide you're using with your team if you're a designer or a dev?
I have a rare illness and I'd like to make a yelp-like review site for healthcare providers who specialize in my disease and other chronic illnesses. Is there a simple way to make something like this. I know about as much HTML as I needed to have a bitchin' MySpace page in 2006. Any suggestions?
I just registered a domain with GoDaddy, and I want to know if there's an easy way to make a website for free (ad free ideally, but they do say there's no such thing as a free lunch...)
Hey all,
I have reason to believe my college professor might be taking my code and using it for her own projects outside of teaching.
I won't go into details because it's kind of irrelevant, but I would like to know how to do something.
I've seen on Awwwards that most pages use unformatted, delineated html/css/js. As in if I click on "view page source" it all appears on one single line.
How do you do that? Is there a special parser or tool to do this? I've tried googling it, but I'm not sure what it is even called.
Anyways, I think if I can find a way to do that, the next time I submit something it will be a bit of a deterrent and also subtlety tell her to stop.
It has been a long day, but if you guys know what I'm talking about, I'd greatly appreciate some help trying to find this tool.
This is odd. Say I have my images in folder /photos/ and a photo named 000053.jpg exists in it. When i hit the url /photos/000503.jpg, an image that does not exist in the folder, the url is automatically being changed to /photos/000053.jpg.
Any idea why this happens?
I imagine this has been posted before but for anyone who isn't familiar with it, here's a web design scam that I hadn't encountered before:

Now, there's a few red flags to consider here, but I figured, whatever, let's see where it goes.
After some back and forth, all of which was suspicious it ended up at this:
I want you to help me charge my credit card for $5,350 with the Cc company charges, you will deduct $2,200 as deposit for the ...etc, etc.
Uh huh.
In short, you'll be left holding the bag on whatever money you've given away.
Don't fall for it folks. If it looks fishy, Google it.
Hey guys.
Just wondering if anyone here has any experience as a Shopify partner. Been looking at the program and have to say it looks pretty juicy, but am wary that perhaps its a bit too good to be true.
Wondering if anyone can give me their $0.02 on the program and maybe relay some personal anecdotes on their experience.
Thanks!
I'm not sure if "templates" is the right word since I've been googleing and not finding what I'm after.
Nevertheless. I need a program that lets me design patterns in exact cm/mm and then be able t print it out on a A4 paper. For example. I need to make a bunch of 3mm circle that are aprox. 1.5-2mm apart from each other and then print it out on a A4 to use as a template.
The company I'm working for is launching a new website through Shopify. They've asked me to go through the new site before it goes live an make sure everything "social media-wise" is good to go. I have no idea where to start or what to look for. I've asked for more clarification but got a "that's why we hired YOU" response. Beyond checking the links on the widgets, what else would you check for?
Hi! I'm about to graduate in May with a CS degree and work as a web dev for a custom T shirt company. I love web dev, but I have always appreciated great design! I have played around a bit with Adobe CS and Sketch and made a few little sites of my own. But I feel like I want to know the principles behind web design to make better designs, and have assignments to force me to make things and give me ideas/inspiration, and feedback on my designs.
Does anyone know of a great design school? Or classes I could take? I've looked at a few graduate programs, however, it seems a lot of them want you to already have a design background from undergraduate.
I know there are a lot of online resources for learning, but are there any good classes for someone who learns a lot better when being taught in person? I'm also looking for specific feedback to help improve my designs! (It's like I know my designs don't look right, but I don't know why)
I would love to take classes to learn in a more systematic way. Is this totally unrealistic? Should I just stick to self-study and use the abundance of online resources?
Hi all!
We started a little study group over at /r/javaScriptStudyGroup. As kind of a fun/informative thing in the group, we're doing an AMA with a redditor who landed a gig as a front end engineer at Facebook.
The AMA is live now and can be found here: http://ift.tt/1Lj1OPl
Feel free to stop by the group and/or the AMA!
Thanks!!
I have a social site that I've been working on for the last couple of months. The website is fully responsive and works on every type of device, desktop to mobile.
I haven't launched yet because I wanted to create an Android app alongside the site, however, I'm beginning to think it's not necessary for launch if I have a fully responsive site.
Do you think an app (for a social platform) is necessary at launch? Is a responsive website enough or should I be concerned about fewer people using my site due to the lack of an app?
I landed a frontend position at Facebook recently. I don't start until May, though. I've started to look into React but I'm far from being a master at it. For those that are well versed in React, how did you learn it?
Thanks!
Hi,
we have been working with our web designers and find it very difficult to do reviews of the upcoming websites. Each time we have to take a snapshot and then add text to it. Very unproductive.
I saw several products that allow for online review of designs, but they are mainly for images / designs, not websites. I found them here: http://ift.tt/1RAbDId
Does anyone know of a good, free service that would allow me to view proposed website in my browser and just comments directly on that website? For example, if label is misspelled, I can just write a text over it, saying misspelled and so on.
Thanks!
Hi Webdesign community!
Basically, I need an interface where a visitor selects a few parameters, and the outcome is a list of options. Think of typical stores where you can select your budget, whether you're male or female, and your budget. These websites usually just have an interface where you select these options in a simple lay-out. I would like to recreate this but take the visitor on a journey, rather than just select in tickboxes.
So, first screen he selects his budget. Second screen, he selects his hobbies, third screen,... and so on.
Is there a WP plug-in that allows this? Would the easiest road be Javascript (I have very limited experience with javascript)? Any other suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
Hi,
I work for a software testing company based in Scotland. We are going to be hosting an information session for some kids to show them what software testing would be as a career.
As part of this, we want to show some terribly designed websites. Looking for some examples form you lovely people! Hoping that you might have some in mind that you may have come across at some point. Mobile, tablet and desktop! Things like images not displaying at the right size on different screen sizes and all that kind of thing. Obvious defects rather than a bad font choice.
Appreciate any suggestions you have!
I've read a bit of colour theory about complimentary colours I'm wondering if you have insight on why these colours are so popular (or is it just because they are convenient?)
There are so many to pick from, what are good examples of 2-4 of those chosen for styling?
I'm currently working as a freelancer on Upwork for web design but find myself quite limited. I know HTML and CSS enough to comfortably use it -- I'm no master but I can make sites using them. I constantly find myself skipping over jobs because I don't have the required skills; javascript, php, seo, WordPress, and a bunch of other things that I don't even know what they are. My question is what order should I learn things in? I know it depends on what I want to specifically do and all but in terms of most important skills to have, what order should I go in? Thanks!
Hi reddit. Quick question. Can anyone anwer me why Firefox sucks so much in rendering radial gradient in their browser. Example i wanted to use on my site - http://ift.tt/1VbNsEM. In Chrome it looks very smooth, no flaws.. but Firefox (as always) has some problems. Is there any workaround to make it look a little bit better? Thanks.
If the link violates any rules cut it out.
If you want me to mention your site shoot me the link together with your tips.
That's it - looking forward to making this list even bigger together!
Cheers, Arian
