Creating digital mockups in Photoshop

I have recently repositioned myself from a logo designer to a brand identity & visual identity designer. This requires much more effort on the quality of presenting brand elements such as packaging, business cards etc. In order to have a proper portfolio of work, going the extra mile on making those elements look great needs more than a premade mockup from mockupworld.

My question is: is there a tutorial or a guide anywhere on making digital mockups from zero, from just basic shapes on Photoshop and then adding effects to make them look realistic? (APART from 3D software of any kind) I have searched far and wide with no luck.

I am aware that a lot of designers tend to take actual photographs of their work, but in most cases it’s all digitally made.

Brand identity designers of design subreddit, how do you do it?
