How to put thousands of items in a form?

What's the best (best=best for user) way to collect a single selection from a list of thousands in a form?

I am modifying an existing form and need a new input. The new input has low thousands of possible choices (all options are fixed/predetermined from a list). The list is alphabetical.

E.g. A list of all the types of dogs, and user knows they want to select "poodle', or maybe 'French Poodle".

Is there a standardized way to do this? I don't recall any forms with this level of data before and I'm concerned that my thoughts on the matter are very user unfriendly.
