What is the best way to manage difficult clients while also maintaining your own design standards?

So, here's the thing.

I've been working for almost four years as a Designer in various fields (mainly web design, though), and there is always a point where I get a bit frustrated while handling a client who simply doesn't want to listen to my professional view and therefore kinda 'destroys' the whole thing by wishing things that are just 'off'. Of course I had wonderful clients that were a pleasure to work with, and the end-results in these cases showed this as well, but most of the times I'm getting to the point where I say to myself: "Fine. That's it. I'll distance myself from the project, implement the clients wishes and will be done with it - moving on.".

As you can imagine, this often results in a project I'm not really proud of.

So I was wondering how other professionals handle these situations. Are you trying to talk through advice-resistent clients? Are you giving up on projects? Are you distancing yourself emotionally from the project right at the start?

I think I could improve my attitude and therefore the outcome of those projects by learning to handle those situations better. So, what's your take on that matter?
