I'll just keep this real short. Here's a JSFiddle of my very simplified code. I've added notes to the bottom of the HTML input section.
Basically, what I'm trying to achieve is background color change and image cross-fade on hover. I would prefer to accomplish this through CSS alone, but I'm open to javascript solutions. I really appreciate the help! If you need anymore info, please let me know.
