Examples of well designed, content heavy sites?

I work in the STM industry designing very large sites that serve content like medical journals and books through subscriptions, physical purchase, and open access content.

We have some examples, but it's difficult to find really well designed sites that are content heavy. It seems news sites are somewhat close, but only to a degree.

Any recommendations or curated lists you know if I we could utilize?
