What must be done to an .svg image to accommodate a fill color?

I converted a .png icon to .svg (using an online converter), and it did a great job replicating it and getting all the coordinates accurately.

But, when I apply fill:#hex-color to the css, it doesn't change color.

I know some SVG icons can accommodate this, others not.What can I do to this SVG icon or what can be done so it it can accommodate a css fill and change color?
