I'm about to dip my toe in the waters of freelance webdesign, and I have a few questions before I dive in...

Hey there! Like the title says, I'm about to get into freelance webdesign. I'm 17, and so far I've created one website, which is here, just in case you'd like to check it out (Took me roughly 6 or 7 hours to make). I'll be using Hover as my domain service, and Squarespace (For now at least) as my hosting service. My questions here are as follows:

  1. Are my choices for domain and hosting good/bad? Should I need to, what other services should I use instead?

  2. Biggest obstacle I'll have to face in web design as a whole and/or as a freelance web designer?

  3. What should my pricing be for the average website?

  4. Are there any other services I should use for payment (ATM I'll be using PayPal), project organization, time management, etc?

  5. Should I set up contracts in person, over the phone, online, etc?

  6. Should I include my first website on my portfolio?

  7. What are common mistakes an entry level freelance web designer will make, and how do I avoid making those mistakes?

  8. Will Squarespace be ok for me to use until I learn the necessary coding languages, or is there something better that I could use to design websites?

  9. Any other tips/tricks I should know before I jump in?

Any/all responses are greatly appreciated! I'm really excited to get into this, as I've seen how much the average website sells for which, at 17, is FANTASTIC money. Plus, it's something I truly enjoy doing, and hopefully could become a career of mine :) Thanks again!

Bootstrap and Co. From the perspective of a 13 year old developer

Hi all. I've been programming ever since I was 11 and I've been doing web development for about a year. I've taken some time to look at different HTML & CSS frameworks, as well as several old 90s and 00s web design tactics. Personally, I feel that Bootstrap is a wonderful asset. I'm not amazing at CSS, which is why frameworks such as Bootstrap and MDL are so useful to me. I don't care to spend hours on building my own CSS theme; especially since it will end up looking like countless other themes built with frameworks like Bootstrap. Now, this may not be a popular opinion (or it might be, idk), but it's how I feel.

[Question] Will employers know if you use a pirated copy of Adobe CC?

I have Adobe CC at work but only a pirated copy of Adobe CS 6 at home. I've been reluctant to switch over, but recently took on a freelance project. Since I can't use my work computer for this project, I'm wondering: - Is it worth it for me to buy the very expensive Adobe CC? Not even sure if the money I make on freelance will even offset the price of CC :/ - if I hypothetically pirate it, will they be able to know when I hand off my files? Is pirating CC a lot more complicated/annoying than the older CS?

Why are design concepts often so far from most real designs?

Sorry for the bad title, but I just can't describe this really well in a short sentence. What I mean by this is the typical "dribbble" style of design, it looks modern, somewhat futuristic. There's flat design and a lot of whitespace everywhere, in my opinion that is what most web designers see as good design as long as it is not resembling Material design too much (which in my opinion is becoming very boring).

A good example to show what I mean is this 100 days UI inspiration / showcase. This type of design is very popular among design concepts, but not in the real world. What's up with that?

I know there are some popular companies that do often use a similar style (Duolingo, Spotify, Airbnb), but those seem to be the exception and it's barely comparable. Prove me wrong, though!

Need help with identifying a type of design!

I'm getting a tattoo from a respectable artist, but I have to bring in some reference material. I can't seem to find this type of design anywhere.

Essentially, what I want is to have a clock, but in a side view. Now let's say in that side view, you literally pulled apart the clock like an accordion. The inside components would be separated from left to right. What would this be called? I can't find it online anywhere.

Looking for a drawing tablet for my GF

Hi all,

I know this has been asked a few times, but I didn't find a newer post that dealt with my specific question. I am looking for a drawing tablet for my girlfriend. She's a fashion design student and will mainly use it for illustrations of various kinds.

She has never used one before, so I don't want to go out and buy the most expensive one of the market if she finds out it's not for her. Also, given her need I assume she can do with a cheaper model?

So my question is where I find a tablet with a good price/quality ratio? I'm looking in the price rang of 100-150 €. I could pay more if you reckon it's necessary or the ones in my price range is shit.

I have been looking at this one. I'm pretty sure the 'before price' is not right, but still it seems like good value for money? Also decent reviews.

Thanks a lot in advance!

[Question] Using Flexbox while supporting IE9

I have a project that I'd like to use flexbox on but I need to support IE9. Is there anything wrong with using flexbox and then have a fixed width layout fallback through IE conditional stylesheets? Or is there a case for needing a fluid/responsive layout in IE9 and below? I feel like converting it from flex to fixed would be easier/faster than not using flex at all. Thanks!

So I am trying to come up with a solution that shows total social impact without showing total count.

I was wondering if anyone else was trying to tackle this problem. Been looking for inspiration so I figured I would try to reach out.

How Could I Approach Building this Web Service?

I am taking a class on Web Services. Supposedly we learned Angular JS and used Parse this semester, but I'm pretty lost about the whole thing.

Anyway, for my final exam project I want to create a web site that provides two services.

1) allows the user to enter their zipcode and the distance to get movie times. The result will display movie theaters based on closest to farthest distance and for each theater my site will list the PHONE NUMBER for the theater, movie TITLEs, RATINGs and RUNTIMEs.

Users should be able to input a rating for movies on a scale of 1-5.

2) Search a movie archive and look at the TITLE, MPRA RATING, and RUNTIME for older movies.

I am already working on the interface. I'm supposed to use parse but I found the API that I need on OnConnect

Is there any way that I can make this work?

How to deal with having to use very large background images

I work for a small web agency. My designer/boss wants me to integrate this image as a background for all the pages in a new website I'm integrating: http://ift.tt/1Rh1MIa

There's a lot of content on the homepage, so she just made this image that spans over 3000 pixels of height. She's done this multiple times in the past and I've repeatedly told her it probably wasn't a good idea, and how it affects the loading time of the page. But she won't hear it and really wants me to make something extremely close, if not identical to her design.

I've been able to sometimes identify recurring patterns in her images and make a repeatable background out of it in Photoshop. But in this case, I'm not sure how I could handle it without simply yielding and actually using a 1800x3400 image as a background image for every page. The only way to optimize it I can even see at this point would be shrinking the image a little bit and stretching it across with background-size: cover

Any ideas? Are there techniques/solutions I'm missing?

The "non-existing" glue between frontend and backend developers.

I’ve recently started as a web-developer (backend) at a Company, pretty big to be a web agency, however I found out that the communication between backend and frontend developers is kind of “bad” sadly… For an example last week:

I jumped in to a project as “Frontend support” (we’re about 1 month before release) and like I said I’m usually a backend developer with a lot of knowledge in the frontend part.. And all of our frontend developers running OSX ("weird huh?”) and I’m running Windows. There’s the first problem, they was using CodeKit to serve sass/less/scss/kit files (or whatever they used) and I know that I can’t serve .kit files on my windows machine without ex. NodeJS&Gulp/Grunt, which is not surprising.

Then the question hit me, “How should we do this, I mean the front-end developers should not have to sit and write code in Visual Studio while the back-end developers want Visual Studio and would like to avoid NodeJS + gulp / grunt etc.”

So to improve this I’ve “kind of took the role” and make sure it happens, so if you want, you are welcome to share your knowledge of this and how to make the "linkage" between the front-end developer and backend developers better, I mean. Say we are two days before the “release-day”, and the customer says “but we want this button red instead of blue”, then it should (technically) be possible for our backend developers “in a smooth way” to go in and change a less / sass file without having to run a hell of a lot of extensions, right?

Sharing is caring, peace! <3

This client requested that I change a Wordpress theme, eg. seeing if the width can be bigger on higher-res screens. The problem is that it seems it will break the entire sites layout and it will take forever to keep tweaking everything. Has anyone ever run through this or have a good way of explaining to a client that it may seem simple but its not?

How do we futher reduce time needed on AutoCad

To anyone out there using AutoCad for work, is there any method or system one can use to reduce the number of hours needed to spend on AutoCad? Right now, I realised that many spend many long nights on drawing construction drawing sets, which I believe don't justify to the value of the projects, and is simply inefficient.

I know Revit allows faster drawing, but many companies at my area still stick to AutoCad.

Do you sometimes wish you never learned design because of the way it changed your view of the world?

A stretched rubber band never returns to its original shape...

This is probably just a random self post, but I thought I'd just put it out there. So, I went to design school for about two and a half years, jumped into 3 internships during that time, and worked professionally for about 10 years afterwards. During that whole time, I delved deeper and deeper into the psychology behind all aspects of design, marketing, and advertising. It trained to to target, segment, manipulate, persuade, etc. And that left me seeing the world in a very different light. I can't enjoy anything anymore because I can't help but think that everything is manufactured to tug at your emotions, nothing is genuine. I see my kid's faces light up when they experience something, like a product or toy, and my immediate reaction is, "yeah of course you feel that way. That how it was designed." But naturally I just keep my mouth shut. Why destroy that joy for them? So sometimes I wish I wasn't so hyper aware of everything. I wish I had that sense of wonderment back. Sorry, not trying to be a Debbie downer. It's just a realization I been having getting closer to the holidays.

Help with first app UI design project

So I've finally got my first app ui project. I'm confident in my skills but since I've only designed and developed for the web before I have questions about app ui design.

I've been upfront with the client about my lack of experience but he's liked my previous work. I am only doing the design right now and no coding whatsoever. The clients plan is to get this right before going to dev and then having us interact to solve any design requirements during dev.

I've looked on the web for guides but the information is too scattered or seems to differ from blog to blog.

So here are my questions and please be gentle if they are very dumb.

  1. What does the final design file sent to the developers contain? Is it just a bunch of PSDs? How different is the design file for ios from Android?
  2. How do I show transitions? Like a menu popping out or some such. Is it like a document I write or something else?
  3. Do I make different sizes of screens for different versions of Android/different phone sizes?

Would appreciate the help.

[Discussion] The Mac is to Graphic Design what the Electric Guitar was to early Rock and Roll.

I'm doing my dissertation at the moment. Pouring over one after another graphic design tomes and the Mac keeps cropping up in introductions.

Countless times I've read that the Mac is almost placed on this godly pedestal to be viewed as awesome and fundamental in graphic design.

Of course when the Mac came out it fundamentally changed how designers worked, but am I missing something when I say, that computer aided design changed how we work and not specifically the Mac?

I'll put on record that I use a Surface. I don't dislike Macs, I use them when I need to work on a larger screen, as that is what my University provides. But I see them as no different to other PCs. They're very well made machines but I don't see why they're given this infallible majesty.

At the end of the day, without Adobe or other software, Macs are about as useful to Graphic Designers as Books are, research machines.

I'm not trying to start some kind of flame war of Windows V Mac or anything similar, I'm just interested to see what peoples views are on our industry almost perpetuating this blind brand loyalty to tge possible detriment of other tools.

How to approach overdue invoices with a client?

I've recently finished a website for a large law firm, and agreed with them an initial deposit of 50%, with the remaining 50% being paid in 5 monthly instalments.

The first of those five invoices became overdue today, and I know they're going to be unresponsive.

However, they requested about a month ago that I schedule to remove a member of staff from their staff page.

How can I hold this change 'hostage' and approach the overdue invoice issue without pissing them off and potentially losing the rest of the payments?

Cheers!

How do I handle an angry client in an underestimated project?

Hi /r/web_design !

I'm working for a small web start-up and when we started the company few months ago, we accepted a project which consisted of developing an app. It was an interesting project with deadlines that we thought we could handle. The first steps of the project went well and we reached each deadline on time. But now, we are at the end of the project and we realise how much we underestimated the scope of the project. For your information, our contract doesn't stipulate any fixed deadline, just time estimation per development steps and a fixed project price.

We are already 2 weeks over the final estimated deadline and to be honest, there is still a lot left to do. We were expecting to have a beta ready several times in these 2 weeks but each time, we underestimated the amount of work left. It brings us to today: we have worked almost triple the amount of hours compared to the initial estimation. We would like some advice on how to handle this. We understand that the client is angry because we are over the deadline, but in the same time we are the one who has spent 3 times the amount of hours we estimated plus working both weekends and evenings. They will get the app really late, but also at ~30% of the actual cost.

We are being completely transparent with our client, but now they are really impatient (borderline angry/menacing).

It really sucks to be developing at a loss and only get negativity from the client. Any advice on how we should talk to them?

Issues with CSS and how it displays on my machine ONLY.

Ok so basically the problem is that the CSS on my machine is displaying slightly differently than on different machines.

Now i don't mean cross browsers/cross platforms etc i know how to develop websites and understand this concept.

Im talking about SAME OSX, SAME BROSWER, SAME BROWSER VERSION.

On my machine the buttons show perfectly because I developed them on my machine. How ever on my work colleges machine the buttons look slightly off (more padding on bottom) and other aspects of the site where we use margin and padding etc are like 3/4 pixels out? its so strange....

It all looks fine just slightly out of position by very small amounts but enough to make it look like its wrong...

Its very frustrating and i'm about to do a clean install of OSX but this method to resolve the issue seems a bit drastic.

The issue is also with other browsers and other operating systems.

SEE FOR YOUR SELF :D http://ift.tt/1Pn2EMf

OTHER MACHINES ALL DISPLAY THE SAME (slightly off css) Chrome on windows
Chrome on mac
Firefox windows
firefox mac
etc etc....

MY MACHINE ALL DISPLAYS CORRECTLY AS I WANT IT TO DISPLAY.... Chrome on mac Firefox on mac

Thanks to anyone that takes the time to read this and perhaps post a solution.

I don't get it.
