Right now I am solely focusing on building my portfolio. I want maybe 10 - 15 websites, and a few logos to show off.
I'm sitting around wondering why I should bother trying to give away free websites, cheap rates, or whatever to get first time customers so I can show off their website. I figure, if I give away 10 websites for free (That I couldve charged $500 for), I basically am spending $5000 to build my portfolio since it's all lost revenue.
Is it unethical, wrong, or ineffective, to just design mock-up websites for made-up businesses and show them on my portfolio? Do clients actually care if the businesses exist, or do they just care about seeing the designs you're capable of producing, and seeing if it will fit their project?
