Designing an invoice for a family friend. Things are turning for the worse. What can I do?

I know this isn't web-related - but I do frequent this sub a lot (and am a designer) and really need some help on this.

My girlfriend's sister's husband wanted some invoices designed and printed. I actually never do print, I solely do web but, hey. Family is family, right?

I decided to to this pro-bono. I figured, "psh, just a single invoice. Shouldn't take long to design at all".

I was wrong. Wrong as fuck.

The first revision was sent on Oct. 7 - since then, there have been several changes requested by him and several revisions sent with updates. Specifically:

  • 8 emails on his end containing miniscule changes
  • 8 invoice revisions sent to him

The entire time I was designing on a template given by an online print company (which we're using). This template is 8.5" x 11". Now, for some reason, after ALL of these changes - he's like "I want it smaller". Unfortunately, this company doesn't have a template for a smaller size, so we're stuck with this.

It's getting ridiculous. It's already taken almost a month and a half for this little invoice to be created, because of the amount of changes he constantly requests. And now I might have to start from scratch because of he wants it "smaller". I feel like just saying, "sorry, only comes in this size, 8.5" x 11", but I know he won't accept that.

I also have the issue of my girlfriend being like, "just get it done - I don't want him to not like you".

Not to mention I'm not getting paid (I told him I'd do this for free cause I figured it wouldn't take long - lesson learned).

What the hell can I do to remedy this situation? Here's a couple options I came up with.. feel free to comment and help a brother out!

  • Option 1: Scrap it (this will cause a rift in my relationship with him which has repercussions, socially)
  • Option 2: Find a company that does the template I need (the 8.5 x 5.5 size, smaller) - which is fucking time consuming to find, and doesn't guarantee i'll find one
  • Option 3: Tell him straight up that 8.5 x 11 inches is the only size, sorry!

Any help would be appreciated. Seriously.
