What's the difference between tumblr and wordpress?

My goal is to just create a personal blog. I wouldn't mind visitors, but I also am thinking of having that blog in its own domain.

I figure once I'm more used with WP I can move into its local browser build- but for now I want an easy accessible blog/site that can gather views from a community, local based (tumblr users, WP users) or not.
