How do I go about getting a decent classic comic book effect using Illustrator and Photoshop?

I've been messing with the color halftone effect in Illustrator and then giving the piece a distressed look in photoshop. It looks decent, but is not up to the quality that I want. I think the biggest issue for em is that the halftone effect gives more of polka dot/picnic table look rather than an old school comic book.
