PSA: Chargeback Scam

There's been a few PSAs over the past year, and I think it would be appropriate to mention it again. I was targeted with the following scam yesterday.

I was able to attain enough information to report it to the FBI and to their bank. Hopefully someone gets tracked down.

In short, they request a service from people who accept credit cards. Pay you for that service and also come up with a story about how their other freelancer doesn't take credit card. They ask you if they can add on the $3,500+ to your bill and you transfer the funds to a bank account. Then, after you've transferred the funds they chargeback the credit card charge (the money they sent to you). You're out the money you sent because there are no protections for you.

Read more about the specific chargeback fraud I received (not my website, but one that details it well) and keep a lookout for red flags:

  • Terrible grammar or spelling
  • Extreme anticipation to pay you (what a great attribute to have in a client)
  • Asking if you accept credit cards before any other step
  • Not focusing on the actual project but rather focusing on how the project will be paid for
  • Asking you for favors

Epic visual tool
