I've been trying to figure out for a while now (for a project) how to properly do drag/drop interactions with a paged, static grid. My current setup is that I have a set of items that can be dragged and dropped as a copy from a list onto said grid, which is split into rows, then columns, all laid out with flexbox. The rows and columns are all currently pre-generated from data already stored in the database, with the columns being blank.
What would be the best way of actually implementing the saving/replacing/swapping/deleting/etc. of the items in the grid? Automatically generate all grid items when the "grid" is created by the user, and have some sort of "null" or "placeholder" item fill in all of the spaces initially, allowing something like either hidden forms that has the item's ID or just use plain elements with data- attributes for storing said data (including position)? Or is there a better known way to do something like this?
